Nearly one-third of this years graduates from the daytime Duke MBA at the Fuqua School of Business have opted for post-MBA careers in consulting, the school has revealed.

Further, six of the top ten employers of Duke MBA graduates in 2013 were firms specialising in consultancy, Fuqua's Career Management Center notes. Deloitte remains the top employer for the third consecutive year, while other consultancy firms hiring multiple Duke MBA graduates include Bain and Company, McKinsey and Company, Boston Consulting Group, Accenture LLP, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Other firms noted by the school for recruiting Duke MBA graduates are:

•   Microsoft
•   Citi
•   Goldman Sachs
•   Amazon.com
•   Bank of America Merrill Lynch
•   Apple

Rising Salaries for Duke MBA Graduates

Fuqua's Career Management Center also reveals that Duke MBA graduate starting salaries have risen in comparison to the previous year, with average levels now standing at almost US$ 115,000. Signing bonuses amongst the graduating Duke MBA cohort averaged over US$29,000, which also represents a rise compared with the previous year.

Speaking of the apparent preference amongst Duke MBA graduates for careers in the consultancy sector, Fuqua's associate dean for career management, Sheryle Dirks suggests multiple factors are likely to play their part.

"Duke MBAs pursue these highly competitive positions for a variety of reasons: consulting quickly and intimately exposes them to the greatest challenges companies and organizations face and offers them the chance to apply many of the frameworks and skills they learned in business school, often while working with clients in a variety of industries and at locations around the globe."
